Driving To Deliver Service With A Difference


Emily Caviglia, a delivery driver for insulation and interior building products distributor CCF, reveals what attracted her to the construction and distribution sector and how she puts service first for customers every day.

Taking the wheel

Having worked in an office environment and similar indoor roles it was in 2014 that Emily decided she would take her love of driving and make a career out of it by training to becoming a Class 1 HGV driver. This led to a number of different driving jobs before Emily spotted an advertisement to join the CCF team based in Stoke. As the only female driver at CCF stoke and the entire CCF branch network for that matter, Emily, at the moment, is one of a kind, but is keen to share with others the job satisfaction a driving role in the construction industry can offer.

“Being on the road and meeting different people does help to make every day that little bit different.” says Emily. “I get to meet a lot of builders and visit a lot of construction sites, which might not sound glamorous to some, but this industry has a lot of great people and I get a sense of satisfaction knowing that I’m part of a bigger picture, helping our customers get what they need when they want it to build tomorrow’s houses, schools, care facilities and more.”

Maintaining excellent service and safety

A big part of driving, especially when carrying often heavy building product from distributor, to delivery vehicle, to customer, is about service and ensuring that health and safety is paramount at all times. As a CCF driver, Emily’s day starts at around 6.30am where she will make the necessary vehicle checks before working with other colleagues to load the vehicle correctly. It is Emily’s responsibility to ensure product is loaded in the correct order and in the right way with a Moffett crane – to ensure the safe loading and unloading.

“All of our vehicles are accredited to FORS Gold standard and are lovely to drive. I use the same vehicle every day so I know the ins and outs of it. There’s lots of supporting features, such as the Moffett truck mounted forklift , which we use on a daily basis and helps to ensure a quick and safe turnaround when loading and unloading. There is also technology on the vehicle which tells you the weight of product so you know to never exceed the maximum load, or it will be flagged, which is really useful. All of this helps to get us out on the road in no time at all to ensure our customers get deliveries swiftly, but importantly never compromising on safety.”

Encouraging diversity

CCF, as part of the Travis Perkins plc group, has a reputation for encouraging diversity and has formed groups internally, including ‘Workforce with a Difference’ and the ‘Women’s Community’, to address how to broaden its workforce by attracting more applicants of different genders, backgrounds and skillsets.

“I’ve received nothing but positivity from my colleagues and I’d say to any woman or man to definitively give driving a go. You are out all day, sometimes long hours, but if you enjoy the freedom that being on the road can bring and enjoy meeting new people then it could be the job for you. It is also easy to fit family life around as once you are done for the day you are done, which is important for me to have that work life balance.”

The future

An excellent delivery fleet is the backbone of any distributor or merchant and is increasingly being used by customers to measure the value of service, alongside breadth of product, price and technical support. Only by investing in drivers through ongoing training and support, and the vehicles to ensure they are safe, reliable and up to date with modern features and benefits, can the industry as a whole grow reliable and steadfast delivery fleets.
